Club Swimming Options
Parents of younger swimmers often ask about winter swimming programs. Our immediate area offers a wide range of excellent options, from small programs that concentrate entirely on stroke mechanics to large, highly-competitive programs that emphasize race preparation and encourage participation in winter meets, with several variations in between. Below we have put together an alphabetical list of several local swim clubs to make finding them easier.
Typically the club season runs September through May, with weekly practices and at least one monthly indoor meet, and breaks that usually coincide with the Montgomery County public school calendar. Advanced club swimmers often have the option of swimming in the summer too, with practices and meets scheduled so as to not conflict with Rock Creek’s summer league schedule. Clubs vary in pricing, requisite skill level, team size, pool location, practice times and the minimum number of weekly practices a swimmer must attend, but there is usually at least one club that is a good fit for every summer swimmer.
Many of these clubs also offer stroke and turn clinics throughout the school year that are a less expensive, less formal commitment than full team membership. Clinics may be a good option for younger swimmers who are just getting into the sport, as well as members of the Pre-Team and Future Fins. These clinics are a great way to keep improving technique throughout the school year and become a stronger swimmer. Montgomery County also offers a popular weekly stroke and turn clinic from October to May at county indoor pools, and registration typically opens in mid-July, with spots historically filling very quickly.
Of course, club membership or winter swimming is not a prerequisite for Rock Creek summer swim, but if you are interested in learning more about a particular program, email SwimReps@RockCreekPool.
